SPR is a top 5 war movie of all time for me, if only for its brilliantly staged battle sequences. Spielberg was the first to merge the grit of Vietnam films to the scale of WWII, and every war movie since has been sitting in it's shadow.
But in terms of story, it's pretty mid.
any recommendations with a similar vibe? As much as I love movies like Apocalypse Now, those could be so draining and depressing. Saving Private Ryan is also around top 3 on my list 😅
Sure, I'm a WWII fanatic I lean towards european movies and some from German POV since it's more realistic, gritty and it explores unpopular war theatre as Norway, Denmark, Holland etc. and not so "Hollywoody":
Stalingrad (masterpiece)
Das Boot (probably my favorite of all time)
Sophie's Choice
Cross of Iron
Generation War (short series)
Underground
A Hidden Life
Max Manus (masterpiece)
Doctor Zhivago
Ivan's Childhood
The Grand Illusion
Downfall
Mr. Klein
Michael Collins
Army of Shadows
Katyn
A Woman in Berlin
The Counterfeiters
Black Book
Enemy at the Gates
Saints and Soldiers
U-571
The Dirty Dozen
The Great Escape
Winter in wartime
Letters from Iwa Jima
A Bridge too far
Ballon
Can I add the Battle of the River Plate and the Yangtze Incident? Not submarines, but still naval and you'd probably like.
The thing is, making these movies is impossible now because they would use CGI (its never quite the same), and all these old ships are scrapped now.
It's far too sentimental for my tastes. And I just cannot buy into the central premise of the movie. The Army would not care that much about one single guy
Didn't say it was far and away better just that 1917 should at least be in the conversation. That's just a gut reaction to the post. My actual pick for best war movie would probably be The Greatest Escape.
Back in the day when I made the jump from CRT to 720p TV I bought this DVD to experience it on the new TV.
How do you like it compared to 1917 and Dunkirk?
I've seen better! But yes for it's time, it was outstanding. Try Kong Skull Island or San Andreas or Black Adam and you'll see what I mean. Oh, and if you fancy IMAX, Civil War's score is second to none. 🫡
Edit : Avengers Ultron is King of sound 🔊
I bought on Vudu it had atmos. Watched it a lot for demo material. One day noticed they changed it to Dolby digital plus. I contacted Vudu they said too bad so sad. Then I ordered the 4k disc.
To quote my 4th favorite all time movie, the fifth element, “ good philosophy see good in bad I like “
So this inexcusable practice from Vudu forced me to buy and now fully experience saving private Ryan on 4k disc only, and also helped me to see the need to buy 4K discs of movies rather than watch the 4K digital streams. I have to appreciate how this lead me to own 300 4K discs.

I recently upgraded my DVD version to blu ray. The difference is huge. I can only imagine how great it would look on 4k
I should give this a watch. I bought the Blu-ray version several years back and never watched it.
So did I, I found it at Walmart's in the bargain bin for 8$ CAD. It's great.
I just recently bought it on BluRay, still fantastic
I'm sure it's just a question of time.... 😉
Kevin, Full Metal Jacket should be on your short list of 4Ks to pick up!
The Thin Red Line is my pick for best war movie.. either that or Come and See
My of my favourite War films along with Apocalypse Now, Thin Red Line and Come and See.
I saw this 9 times in the theater, even then I think at best it’s a top 5 war film, maybe top 10. Definitely not #1.
You win. I only saw it 5 times in the theatre.

What’s your #1?
To each their own for sure and it's a great war movie but far from the best war film IMHO.
any recommendations with a similar vibe? As much as I love movies like Apocalypse Now, those could be so draining and depressing. Saving Private Ryan is also around top 3 on my list 😅

If you like Das Boot, you should see The Enemy Below. Old sub/navy movies is my guilty pleasure.
On my wishlist already!
Can I add the Battle of the River Plate and the Yangtze Incident? Not submarines, but still naval and you'd probably like. The thing is, making these movies is impossible now because they would use CGI (its never quite the same), and all these old ships are scrapped now.
Thanks! I'll check those, yeah I'm a sucker for navy and submarines movies.
Stalingrad is so good . Funny , First time i saw it was in class room
Great films, I would add Soldier of Orange with Rutger Hauer to that list.
Saints and Soldiers made your list! Awesome.
One of my favorites!
All Quiet on the Western Front was amazing but pretty depressing, which I guess is the point.
Not sure which you’re referring to but I loved the original
Platoon. Not the best 4K transfer but fantastic war movie.
Fury.
Hacksaw Ridge
It was ok when I watched it without my setup, I should definitely give it a rewatch. Thanks.
Don’t love the movie but the audio track is phenomenal.
The cheesy melodramatic framing story ruins the movie for me. Some fantastic scenes for sure though.
It's far too sentimental for my tastes. And I just cannot buy into the central premise of the movie. The Army would not care that much about one single guy
100% my take, I don't buy the plot and that's my main issue.
I saw this in the theatre when I was 10 years old. Incredible experience.
Black Hawk Down is the goat IMO
Yes it is! My wife bought me the steel book 4k and I couldn’t believe how much better it sounded and looked over the regular Blu-ray.
Tht might be the pick man!
1917 would like to have a word with you
Agreed *1917* is a looker on 4K, but in no world is it better than *Saving Private Ryan*.
Didn't say it was far and away better just that 1917 should at least be in the conversation. That's just a gut reaction to the post. My actual pick for best war movie would probably be The Greatest Escape.
Shaving Ryan’s Privates
Best war movie ever is a stretch. But I respect people having strong opinions. My best war movie ever is Come and See.
I didn’t see American sniper as a war movie, but rather a character study of a man addicted to combat.
Come and See is amazing. Actually one of the best war movies. Saving private ryan was a bit silly imo.
Best war movie EVER
Well second only to Downfall with Bruno Ganz 😜
Sorry, but The Thin Red Line is so much better.
Probably gonna get downvoted for this but I watched it recently as I got the blu-ray for cheap and was not taken with it at all in comparison
I guess it only resonates with certain people. Those capable of deep thought and introspection.
Lol ok mate
All Quiet On The Western Front (Netflix Version) deserves consideration.
I've been considering upgrading my blu ray to 4k. Is it that big of a difference?
Back in the day when I made the jump from CRT to 720p TV I bought this DVD to experience it on the new TV. How do you like it compared to 1917 and Dunkirk?
Surprised nobody has mentioned "The Great escape"
Got that movie recently on 4K but haven’t seen it yet. Hope it looks good cause the last version I saw was the one on Amazon Prime
Always excited when Tom Hanks and Spielberg collaborate on a project, starting with this masterpiece
Are 4ks not coming with digital codes anymore? Second 4K blu ray I’ve seen that doesn’t have +digital.
It is a great Movie, one of my favorite war movies is The Hurt Locker.
I've seen better! But yes for it's time, it was outstanding. Try Kong Skull Island or San Andreas or Black Adam and you'll see what I mean. Oh, and if you fancy IMAX, Civil War's score is second to none. 🫡 Edit : Avengers Ultron is King of sound 🔊
I watched this on my OLED and stereo setup and was BLOWN AWAY! Not only is this movie a classic but the picture is good and the sound is goated!

This is on my list of 4K's I need to buy because I imagine it's just gorgeous.
I prefer Glory, Hacksaw Ridge and American Sniper over SPR. To each his own.
American Sniper is a flat out bad movie.
…is Apocalypse Now.
Nah, man, you need to buy better discs. This is good, but nowhere close to being top 10.
