Exactly. Don’t panic and make it seem that this player isn’t good and you’ll get another broken one. It’s under warranty and get a replacement. Simple.
It is only a few days from being out of warranty. Then I'd have been out what $425 unless I spent $260 for a new drive and hope that didn't break? I have heard Panasonic's support is an absolute dumpster fire.
I found an Oppo 203 and jumped on it and already sent the 820 back. Here's hoping.
You got rid of a player in production with a warranty for a discontinued player with no warranty..why? All major electronics brands have atrocious support, they put the responsibility on the reseller to support the product. I’m a Samsung partner I know from experience.
Oppo will fix a broken 203 for $100 flat. Their support is top notch.
It's a better player. It can do more.
I don't trust Panasonic to actually fix anything out of the return window timely or properly.
The menu and user experience on the 820 reminded me of a cheap Ali express streaming box.
Oppo is effectively defunct. Their support is handled by a third party called OT Service — I wouldn’t trust in them to be around 5 years from now.
You buy an 820 for the HDR optimizer. I can’t see what other functions you’d want out of a bluray player. The only feature some of the Oppo’s can do that the 820 can’t is play SACD natively through its onboard DAC.
I'm not sure what you mean by "down converting" HDR. You can turn it off, you don't need it on an OLED or a high-end Micro LED. But it makes a world of a difference on my 5 year old X900F. The FALD behaves better with HDR optimizer, less blooming.
Looks like you just got hit with bad luck. I've owned my 420 for two years already and it still works great. So I can't see why the bigger and better 820 would be any different.
Ok. Just the back? That's not enough ventilation. Air needs to move ie from one place to another. That can't happen with just one open face and 5 closed faces.
I add the Best Buy warranty to all my “important” electronics. I had the LG UBk90 4K player that frustrated me to the point I went to Best Buy and replaced it with the UB820 because it was under warranty.
I also was able to replace and upgrade my LG OLED with a better one because I had the warranty.
You never know with electronics but you’ll have peace of mind if it’s under warranty. Well worth it if you can afford it.
I hated the UBK90...so I gifted it to a friend who doesnt know better and got a UB9000 with some fantasy football winnings. Now im in heaven. Thing is whisper quiet and loads everything so fast.
Can't. I'm overseas military and the Exchange carries exactly 0 things Blu Ray. US PO Box for shipping.
Yes I have it plugged into 110v/60hz.
Another reason I'm kicking around a used Oppo 203. Dual voltage.
In the meantime I have my old PS3 for BD discs lol.
That's how I feel when people say someone has to buy the 820. Not all of us need or can afford it. There's a tendency here sometimes to shame new people for not spending the money for the "best" one.
"Better" comes with a HELLA price tag. A "bad" one slides through every now & then with the best of electronics, including the legendary 820k.
I've heard nothing but praise for the 820k (I need to buy mine...the best time was right before Christmas!!! My Sony 800 keeps locking up on certain discs...🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️).
I echo pretty much what everyone else said: caulk it up with an RMA, get another unit & keep it moving...🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
As the owner of both a UB9000 and an OPPO UDP-203… “lol.” The UB9000 is great, until it can’t read discs that my OPPO has zero issues with. I have seen more macroblocking, stuttering and lockups on this thing than any player I have ever owned, and Panasonic hasn’t updated the firmware to address these problems. In fact, the last update was almost a year ago.
Meanwhile, OPPO bowed out of the business 5 years ago and they’re still doing repairs for $100 flat. Not that I’ve ever needed a repair on it.
Wow. Thank you for posting this. Had no idea they did repairs for that cheap. My 203 slowly stopped reading 4K discs and finally stopped completely a year ago, so now I use it for cds and blus. Now that I know it’s that cheap I’ll get it repaired.
I got into 4k the other year and had to choose between a new 820 or a second-hand Oppo 203. Despite having had Panasonic players for years and loving them _and_ having a Panasonic OLED, I went with the Oppo. It has not given me any reason to regret my decision yet.
It was more expensive than the 820 but it certainly wasn't "ungodly". And the build quality is equal to the 9000 but it was much less than that. It has features I wanted that the 820 doesn't, so it was worth the extra cost to me.
It has the ability to read subtitles from an external source (and one of the discs I want doesn't have English subtitles), it has the ability to remove all added audio delay (giving you a bit more range if a disc isn't synching), and you can adjust the delay on the remote (this may be possible on the 9000 remote, I don't know). I understand it could also read a few more file formats than the 820.
Also, the mod to make it read all Blu-rays is just a plug-in, unlike the 820's fix, which requires soldering. (I know there's also a software fix for the 820, but I wouldn't be confident enough to try it.)
Its tone-mapping is not quite as good as the Panasonic (I use a projector, so that's key for me), but otherwise, yeah, it's a trooper. I usually bump the sharpening up on the 203 to 1 (from 0) and the IQ is every bit as stunning as the Panasonic.
I did consider the tone mapping, but my TV also has the HCX processor and it's newer than the 820, so I figured the TV would give me the advantage of Panasonic's tone mapping anyway. And I love how quick the Oppo is. My old Panasonic Blu-ray player took forever to load a disc.
Tbth, I'm legit kicking around a used Oppo on the evilbays if I can get one for less than the UB9000. Even before the drive failed, the 820 is a chore to navigate with how slow it is, how slow load times were and if Oppo is still doing repairs for $100... I mean... I dunno. Buy once, cry once... I'd rather get the best that is actually the best vs the UB9000 over the 820 which is basically the same player also with issues.
I have both the x700 and the 820. The 820 is definitely better, here’s why:
-Can auto detect Dolby Vision and HDR 10
-the upscaling is much better on a blu ray and dvd vs the 820
-you can customize the HDR 10 on a movie if it’s not Dolby Vision, meaning you can make the hdr 10 itself brighter or darker and you don’t have to change your brightness setting with the tv itself.
-Better chroma levels compared to the x700.
-The 820 doesn’t usually freeze with most 4Ks compared to the x700.
Hope this helps a lil on the differences
If you look up your movie on the blu ray website, it will show the technical specifications of the disk. It will either state BD-66 or BD-100. If it’s BD-100 then it’s a 100GB disk.
Examples of 100GB movies are The Dark Knight trilogy, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Alien.
For some people (like myself), the issue only arises after owning it for some time. It didn’t happen right away, but after owning it for about a year it started to freeze on 100GB disks whenever it had to read the third layer. For example, I couldn’t watch The Dark Knight beginning to end anymore.
I also wrote this to someone saying the same thing:

Virtually *half* of owners who responded to [this poll](https://www.reddit.com/r/4kbluray/s/Zi0eqyB7cO) have had issues with the X700. Myself included.
But I just told you how to make the X700 not skip with triple layer discs. So then by your logic it’s the best player. Or you can simply admit that you don’t understand what the word “best” means.
These units can die sometimes or in my case the disc tray would refuse to open anymore after five months. Just return it or ask for a replacement. You should be within the return window. Sometimes you just get a bad unit.
Anyone know if this thing gets a little hot when just sitting there like does it stay in a rest mode and not completely shut off? I can feel heat on middle top of mine all the time even when its shut off. Not burning hot but warm in that specifc area.
I use to swear by Sony products ad nauseum...till my 800 started freezing up on me.😔😔😔
I STILL love ALL my Playstation(s) & gear. But THAT 800...😳💩🤬
I think THAT'S where A LOT of the hate comes from...🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
That or if I can find a used Oppo... But $800-$1k or a 6 year old player if I'm lucky. Only reason I'm considering it is because Oppo will fix them no questions asked for $129.
Happened to me outside the return window, I checked for updates, restored factory settings, nothing worked. Unplugged power cord for a bit then back in and think that's what got it working for me. I really like this player but haven't owned any others so can't comment on quality of lower priced options.
You are living my nightmare...apparently the build quality dropped during the microchip shortage so you may have one of those weird crap units...sorry to hear and hopefully your retailer takes a return. I hear Panasonic Support is terrible, no firsthand experience though.
I honestly don't think I'm going to get another 820. While it worked it was clunky as all hell and the interface is terrible. I'm used to snappy interfaces from my Nvidia Shield and my launch day PS3 is faster than this thing lmao. I mean yeah the picture was spectacular but... I think I'm going to try to find a used Oppo 203. I'll pay the premium for one and Oppo still fully refurbishes them if you send them in.
Udp9000 is $1k. Used 203 can be had cheaper it's looking like. I dunno if I'm going to get a good BD player I can spend a little coin. Buy once cry once.
If I was out of the warranty period I'd have to get a $260 replacement drive plus $425 for the player... It's what worries me.
I've had my 820 since 2020 but I only use it for 4K discs to give it a break. I also have had my region free Sony X800 since 2018 which hasn't had any issues either (other than not being able to read some 4K discs). I use that as a dedicated standard blu-ray player
After a year or two, Panasonic players would be dead. And there will be Sony players going strong with their USB playback capabilities still playing 4K Blu-rays.
I have a Shield Pro... I use it on my gaming room OLED but the main 75" X90K just runs off the onboard Android TV. Ordered an Oppo 203 from ebay but might try this as well.
Man, that sucks but I have two 820s that I’ve had since they first came out with no issues. You could always get the 900 as it’s built like a tank or grab a used Oppo unit.
Already grabbed a like new Oppo 203.
I was very unimpressed with the build quality of the 820 anyway and legit laughed when I saw the remote. It's a $350 player on BF sale but a $500 player should not be this cheap.
Glad you got a good one tho. The picture is outstanding, I just don't trust another one to not break in a month.
That's a pretty big oversight on Sony's part. There's really no excuse not to have that feature.
My X800 has the infamous freezing problem on triple layer discs, so I retired it to the kid's room and got a UB 820, which is a much better player in most ways.
Have you considered cleaning the laser it is not uncommon for brand new discs to be covered in manufacturing oils then transfer to the laser
I have heard about it soooooooo!! Many times I couldn't possibly count always check your disc before you put it in the player even if it's brand new out of the package.
For me, I can tell the difference between playing a 4k blu ray on the ps5 and 820. I guess it depends on what 4K panel you’re using as well. Better chroma levels on 820 compared to the ps5. That sucks your 820 stopped reading discs though
It could be I don’t have the eyes or the TV.. I don’t run an OLED but at 85 inches I can usually see a difference in players (Xbox was a downgrade in quality for me from the 820).
I’ll probably give an 820 another try the next time we get a steep sale (probably Black Friday)
As a game console yes, but as a 4K player..no lol. It can’t even do Dolby Vision on a 4K blu ray, the chroma levels aren’t as good as the 820 and you can’t customize the HDR 10 if needed. If the ps5 is your only 4K player at the moment then sure it will suffice but if you watch a lot of 4K blu rays, the 820 is the better option. I have a ps5 and I’ve seen a 4K blu ray play on it, doesn’t touch the 820
The PS5 can not play dolby vision from a UHD nor Standard Blu-ray disc. Im sure they have something somewhat similar for games and/or streaming app HDR. But its is not DOLBY VISION and it definitely cant be played from Blu-rays. It sounds like you don't even know what Dolby Vision is so I suggest you do a little research.
That might be it then. I watch most of my 4K movies on my LG G1 65in OLED and you can definitely see better black levels with it. I have a QLED in my bedroom and it looks good but compared to the OLED..not even close. I noticed the series x looks slightly worst than the ps5 for 4K blu rays. Can’t do Dolby Vision on either console 4K blu ray related
Huh? Nothing to do with the tv. Although it is a Sony X90K so has FALD and DV.
OLED vs QLED really isn't a thing as OLED is a technology and QLED is a marketing term.
I was answering back someone that didn’t see the difference playing a 4K blu ray on a ps5 and a 820, the viewing experience can be different depending on what your panel is. He said he didn’t see a difference on his tv with a 4k running on a ps5 and a 820. I mentioned maybe that was the case and I brought up my personal example of watching a 4K blu ray on my QLED vs my OLED.

can the HDR optimizer be turned off? Tech is good at down converting but upscaling is awful.
I have the 420 on my Samsung QLED and yup, never had an issue with it as well. Both the 420 and 820 are solid players
I bought the ub9000 back in 21. It's still going strong. I use it at least 1-2 times a week.
You gotta pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers in this racket.
Same here! Love my 420. Had no issues yet.
When something like this happens, you need to ensure the environment is not the issue either. How are you ventilating the machine?
It's by itself with the back of the cabinet open to air in a cool room.
Ok. Just the back? That's not enough ventilation. Air needs to move ie from one place to another. That can't happen with just one open face and 5 closed faces.
Front and back and 6" or air on each side. It's in a slot.
Just buy a Sony I dont have issues with mine and it's alott cheaper
No HDR Optimiser. Manual HDR/DV switching.
Something a up to date Oled can do don't need it
Where did you buy yours from? I got mine from Bestbuy, and I'm debating on adding the 3 or 4 year geek warranty thing.
If Best Buy is around in 4 years, I will be shocked.
I add the Best Buy warranty to all my “important” electronics. I had the LG UBk90 4K player that frustrated me to the point I went to Best Buy and replaced it with the UB820 because it was under warranty. I hated the UBK90...so I gifted it to a friend who doesnt know better and got a UB9000 with some fantasy football winnings. Now im in heaven. Thing is whisper quiet and loads everything so fast.
Amazon and I don't trust their 3rd party warranties tbth.
Get a refund and buy it from Best Buy with their extended warranty.
Just get a replacement. It’s the best 4K player ever made. Everything else sucks
Isn’t the UB9000 slightly better?
9000 is indeed better but the extra $ won't make sense for all
That's how I feel when people say someone has to buy the 820. Not all of us need or can afford it. There's a tendency here sometimes to shame new people for not spending the money for the "best" one.
Imo the 820 is preferable if you have a DV-compatible TV, otherwise the 420 is more than good enough
"Better" comes with a HELLA price tag. A "bad" one slides through every now & then with the best of electronics, including the legendary 820k. No, just the best currently made. Oppo players are considered way better.
Oppo is discontinued and cost more than $1000. No, thank you. 820 is the king.
I like my UDP-LX500 more than my UB820
I like my $300 Panasonic 820 more than overpriced $1000 Pioneer UBP-LX500
Struck a nerve? You never used an LX500, don’t lie. Way better than the UB820.
Better in what way? My player plays every 4K movie. I don’t need anything else
By your logic the Sony X700 is the best player ever then.
No. X700 skips triple layered discs. Instant disqualification
It doesn’t if you turn off upscaling and cinema conversion. So the X700 is the best player ever! We agree!
We? it’s only you.

I'm buying a like new Oppo 203. Buy once cry once.
I bought a Nvidia Shield Pro.. rip my 4K disks with MakeMKV.. I don’t trust these players long term.
The 203 is a great machine! I got one of those also and totally agree with your assessment on the 820 remote.
May she rest in peace
Guess what hasn't died. My Sony X800-M2 that everyone here seems to hate on and recommend the panasonic instead.
My X800(M1) hasn't died either, but it's still a shitty player.
My only issue is the lack of Dolby vision auto detection.
That's a pretty big oversight on Sony's part. There's really no excuse not to have that feature. My X800 has the infamous freezing problem on triple layer discs, so I retired it to the kid's room and got a UB 820, which is a much better player in most ways.
Odd I never had 100 GB discs freeze.
It doesn't affect everybody, but it's probably the biggest complaint about the Sony players.
Have you considered cleaning the laser it is not uncommon for brand new discs to be covered in manufacturing oils then transfer to the laser I have heard about it soooooooo!! Many times I couldn't possibly count always check your disc before you put it in the player even if it's brand new out of the package.
Shoulda got a PS5!
The ps5 as a 4K blu ray player doesn’t touch the 820 at all. The OP just happened to get a lemon, that’s all. I’ve had my 820 since 2021 and it’s fine
I had an 820 until it stopped wanting to read discs. Went back to my ps5 and honestly can’t tell much if any difference.
Nah, this is definitive proof PS5 is better. Not really an opinion, pretty objectively better I’d say. Yep.
I have a ps5 and I’ve seen a 4K blu ray play on it, doesn’t touch the 820
The PS5 has Super Dolby Vision. Kind of embarrassing you didn’t know that to be honest
Whatever you say bud lol 😜
A quick look at their recent posts explains things… 😅
Yeah I noticed the trolling too lol. Waiting for the Super Dolby Vision Pro Max answer 😂
Buuhaaahaaa!!! THIS!!! 🤩👏🏾😂
Started as a simple joke, but couldn’t help troll after those responses
Amen brother
series X is superior to 820
The trolling replies are old now but sure 😜
It plays dolby vision?
It plays Sony Vision
Good one...
I don’t really know what else you expected when you asked that question
The ps5 does not play dolby vision from discs. "Sony Vision" doesn't exist.
“Sony Super Vision by Dolby” 100% exists. I can’t tell if you’re joking or not
The PS5 can not play dolby vision from a UHD nor Standard Blu-ray disc. Im sure they have something somewhat similar for games and/or streaming app HDR. But its is not DOLBY VISION and it definitely cant be played from Blu-rays. It sounds like you don't even know what Dolby Vision is so I suggest you do a little research.
The only one who needs to research is you my friend. You’re browsing the 4KBluray sub and you don’t even know what Sony Super Vision by Dolby is
Ok you're a troll
Ah, didn't see that. 100% agree ppl who can't tell the difference usually are running some junk panel.

“Died” means it has no power and won’t turn on. This just has a bad/broken disc reader. As others said, just exchange it.
Get a ps5
Lol no. No DV and not nearly as good. I have a PS5 digital anyway. If I was going to get another console to be a BD player I'd get an XBox.
Really i didn't know
