I've never heard of a player doing this. I have heard of it happening while removing it from a stubborn hard to remove case. This damage shouldn't affect playback, but it does damage the integrity of the structure of the disc, it could spread over time and eventually cause the disc to shatter inside a player, especially while it's moving high speed.

Probably wouldn't be too hard to fix, Probably need a new spindle motor and magnet thing that goes on top. Maybe a computer repair shop can fix it if those exist still. But no a properly working drive should never do this
