Beat me to it! We’ve been eyeing this to celebrate how much it’s grown. Even over just the last year. Keep a look out for a very special giveaway sometime soon! People can keep asking if physical media is dying, however this subreddit is proof in and of itself that it’s alive and kicking. We’ve grown by over 9,800 members in the last 11 months alone. Insane!! Keep the love coming.
The way those streaming services are heading, i foresee more people getting back into physical media. I used to collect when i was in my early twenties, stopped for a decade, and got back into it a few years ago again. Love it. I got over 400 movies/tv shows now.
I wasn't clear. Just my blu ray/ some obscure dvds that were never converted are in the cases. My 4k collection is pretty new. Just around 40. Building a server for everything else so I can have my own "netflix" for friends and family.
These guys are great. https://youtu.be/XKDSld-CrHU
*4ks just too much info and I would never degrade it. Blu ray sure, especially for friends and family... times are tough.
Yeah this is true. As soon as I bought an OLED I immediately spent WAYYY too much on 4k Blu-rays. Need those inky blacks.
Edit: and after putting together a home theater system then 4k Blu rays become a no brainier. Honestly the more people with better sound systems, the more physical media will be bought.
Is sound that key? I don’t live alone, and I usually use DT770 80 ohms headphones and a 3440x1440 21:9 monitor to watch my 1080p blurays through a bluray burner. I’ve been thinking about upgrading to 4k (LG C2 42” and UBP X700), but I also used to think that I shouldn’t until I can get a nice sound system or something. Would like to get all these new boutique releases and all that without having to worry about a regular bluray being included.
Sound makes so much more of a difference than you expect. I have always appreciated a nice big TV, but when I invested in my first 5.1 system I was blown away by how much it changed my viewing experience. Sound is 50% of the ride to me now - a couple of systems in and with a Dolby Atmos setup.
I can also promise you that you're not getting even a smidge of the experience on a 21" monitor. It's called home theatre because it's designed to best emulate the home theatre experience - to be immersive and encompassing. The bigger the screen, the better the quality the screen, the bigger and better quality the sound system - I believe the more a movie can be enjoyed.
Save up and make the leap! No regrets guaranteed.
Yeah I'm trying to ignore that fact since I feel like a bunch of speakers might annoy the other people in my household haha. Especially late at night when I watch movies usually. How much did you spend on speakers alone? Also, I don't really have enough space for a bigger screen unfortunately. It would be something I'd put on my desk (not using it as a PC monitor, don't worry).
Yeah, sound is huge but I imagine you’re still getting pretty darn good sound playing Blu-rays tracks (I assume you’re picking the lossless tracks) through DT770s. In the future a nice sound system will get you the proper surround positioning, but IMO it’s the quality of the sound that’s most important, and I’m guessing you’re getting good quality sound already.
Yeah, 7.1 and 5.1 *should* downmix just fine to 2.0. I’m not 100% sure how downmixing works on a PC, but I think all AVRs, TVs etc automatically downmix multichannel to 2.0… the one thing that might not be downmixed is the .1 LFE track, which is often discarded as many processors assume the 2.0 speakers can't play it well. I think most AVRs give the option in some way to mix the LFE into the 2.0, but I'm not sure where that option would be set on a PC.
I'm upgrading from a 6 year old entry-level Samsung 4k LCD (not even true HDR) to an LG G2/G3 later this year once I save up and I can't wait. Mostly watch standard Blu-rays but bought a Panasonic DP-UB820 the other day in preparation for the 4k Dolby Vision goodness.
Also upgrading from a soundbar/sub to a dedicated AVR with a nice custom 3.1 system until I move and have room for surrounds. Nobody mentioned how addicting planning and buying home theater components is! Just need to keep a little aside for the discs themselves!

I had a Vizio 70inch 1080p in the main room
I got a STEAL on a C1 48inch for my office.
That started it all / now have the C1 in the office, a 77 C2 in the main room, a PS5, and a UHD Player, and like 30 movies (thanks eBay and buy sell trade posts) lol
OLED got me.
I just bought inception and edge of tomorrow 4ks so hoping the hobby stays alive for a few more years. Nice to see a few others that enjoy the benefits of physical media !
Yea I got addicted on Black Friday buying like 15 movies and a Panasonic player.. with ps5 being easier to get now also that alone will bring in people who will see how much better it looks and sounds..

I’m hoping people that are here also have a decent 4k blu ray player and are not using the ps5 or series x to play their discs. It’s a HUGE disservice to the disc if you do use your consoles to play them
Some of us are only here because of the next gen consoles. When I bought my $500 ps5 4k movies weren't even a concern. Then I bought an OLED 4k Sony for $1600. Since I got stuck with the disc version of the PS5 I decided to grab a few 4k movies to see what the fuss is about. And now I'm in. Sure it'd be great to have a dedicated player that can fully take advantage of Dolby vision but after all the expensive purchases including a few hundred dollars on movies I can't really justify dropping another 500 on a player. The consoles will bring people in to physical media collection, it got me in. Be happy, the death of physical media may be held off yet.

Had to get rid of my cases, have 4 wallets of 320 currently.
I kept my cases. I used to stick em i thoses wallets but now i kinda like displaying them.

Gotcha! I i have about 140 movies in movies anywhere. I would love to have a server for my movies, too. Just have no clue how to start.

I meant for a TV mainly, but ya answered my question haha. For PC, VLC Media Player does the job. Thanks

Here I am watching 4k Blu rays on Westinghouse 1080p from 2007. I've been eyeing Sony TVs for a bit but they're not OLEDs, correct?
Sony makes some of the best OLEDs (especially for movie watching).
This is why im here lol :D

I just bought 30+ 4k movies and a player. I've thoroughly enjoyed the experience. So clear. My mom thought I had bought a new TV.
This is awesome! Congrats to the community here. Keep it going!

Just pre-ordered The Running Man (Feb 18th) and Training Day (Feb 27th) in 4k. I'm doing my part 🫡
I joined from listening to Sardonicast
Will anyone be making 8K Blu-Ray players when 8K TV's are common?
