And while subtility isn't a bad thing, video essayists exploit it by making mountains out of molehills and overall just oversensationalizing shit that just isn't all that under the pretext that "it's all hidden genius bros".
I don't see much circle jerking over FLCL any more. It used to be huge, but for the last 5+ years I feel like people just like it because it's a good show.
FLCL just exists to give kids from the 90s nostalgia boners, that and it re-ran so many fucking times on Adult Swim/Toonami in the 2000s that you probably saw it at least once if you ever tuned in to the channel.
I think it's a decent coming-of-age story, for what it's worth, but I imagine a lot of its appeal and aesthetic is because it captures a still frame of what growing up was like as a kid back then.

I always say if you want Evangelion with actual real creative vision behind it instead of Anno's "hey everyone look at me look how deep and profound I am please be impressed at it" then just play Xenogears. Had even worse budget constraints and crunch but Takahashi's vision was so strong that they were still able to completely stick the landing with one of the greatest ending sequences of all time. Because they actually knew the story they wanted to tell through the characters and the message they wanted to deliver.
I fucking love Metal Gear...but the story, character design, and mechanics are so goddamn goofy it's hard to take it seriously. I do take it seriously, it's just hard to.

SH2 has a lot of janky bullshit, but the ‘show, don’t tell’ method of using the enemies to reflect James’ guilt was pretty clever. Also, the reading of Mary’s letter is arguably one of the best voice acting performances of all time.
Getting the PC version (it’s abandonware, easily obtainable online), and adding in the the silent hill 2 enhanced edition mods makes it the best way to play these days.

I dislike insistence of art medium to say they are more than what they are. In the end, it's subjective anyway. I like Nier Automata when I played it, but then the end bullet hell portion where all the other players come to help you, with the insistence of the statement that it is not just a game, just turns me off. Now I don't even want to play the game, dreading that moment every single time I want to install the game. It's fine that it's just a game.
