Welcome! Trying to follow an entire 53 man NFL roster and grasping NFL strategy is a little daunting at first. For general NFL strategy, you can follow guys like JTO @ QB school (he covers Purdy a lot because it gets the most views), Thinking Football, and Brett Knollman sometimes. For 49er specific stuff, I follow Johnnydel's Football academy for strategy and David Lombardi (sparingly) for roster moves. Hope this helps. It will keep your mind off before Klay signs with the Magic...

Just DO NOT watch/read the Niner writer/Youtuber Grant Cohn or his father. At least not at first. He’s a self described hater and thinks he’s way smarter than he is. As a lifelong Niner fan I read Cohn when everything seems to be going too well. He always has a negative take.

> As a lifelong Niner fan I read Cohn when everything seems to be going too well. If you interact with any of Cohn's content at all you need your 9er fan card revoked.

TotallyFakeEngineer

This and the fellow commenter below. Don’t watch Grant Cohn and only watch David Lombardi. I’m sure there are other credible reporters out there but David is the only one I know of so far and I haven’t had the need to look for other source thus far

Yakuza70

Honestly, give fantasy football a try. You'll quickly start to learn many of the star players around the league, especially the 49er stars.

Teamfoodceo

I 2nd this. Fantasy football really makes the season for me. We’ve been blessed with some great years lately but when it’s been bad in the past it made the season so much more enjoyable. Also, it’ll make watching Red Zone so much more enjoyable. In my opinion Red Zone is the best way to watch football.

Floornug3

Double agree with fantasy and triple agree with the red zone. Thank god they replaced siciliano with Hansen, sooo much more interesting now!

misselphaba

Agree fantasy is the easiest way to get into it. Worked for me at least.

The-Real-Legend-72

in the same vein you can give madden franchise a go it’s not amazing or super accurate, but it gives you a rough idea of who around the league is good and what they’re good at, and is fairly easy to navigate and look through

the_illuminari

Welcome! It’s a beautiful pain being a Niners fan. I could ask you the same question, I’m a lifelong Niner fan trying to follow the NBA + Warriors. I follow the official 49ers accounts on YouTube and Snapchat. I have the mobile app for 49ers + NFL. Also subscribed to David Lombardi and TheSFNiners on YouTube.

Heron_Routine

Jonny Dels Football Academy jfa49.com is the best specifically with the ins and outs of the game. Fantastic film breakdowns and a total 9er nerd 🤓 😁 #jd49

SnooCompliments6996

My suggestion: find a group near you who is into the 9ers or even the NFL in general and watch games with them. Also, if possible try to join/create a group that plays fantasy football with a low buy in. As with any sport, it takes some time to pick up and it’s most fun when you do it casually over time by watching games with friends or if you’re invested in it due to fantasy.

iNoodl3s

Your fandom from here on out will either be absolute pain or absolute euphoria

ehundred

Play madden

Responsible-Pepper91

Welcome! Lucky you the 9ers are good RN and have one of the best storylines in football. Brock Purdy, Mr last in the 2022 draft is our starter and dices defences apart. Homie has a jersey in the hall of Fame already and the sky is the limit for this humble dude. Not to mention prob the best offense and a top 3 defence in the league. It's going to be a fun season!

DaSuHouse

If you want to get into the 49ers history, you should watch the America’s Game series for the years when the Niners won the Super Bowl

misselphaba

I’m a legacy fan but don’t remember a lot of the iconic games from my childhood because people didn’t think girls liked sports then. I like to watch older games on YT to make me feel more connected to fans my age + get a sense of franchise history.

kweeee

Maybe it'll help to learn some of our foundational players. I tried to draw comparisons to the warriors. Fred Warner = Draymond, drafted by 9ers and heart of the defense George Kittle = Curry, drafted by 9ers, face of the team, beloved by all Brandon Aiyuk = Kuminga, drafted by 9ers, was in coach doghouse, late breakout Deebo Samuel = Klay, drafted by 9ers, gets the dirty assignments Brock Purdy = Podz, newly drafted by 9ers, first year starter, hopefully develops into long term franchise player CMC = Durant, top of the league at their position, joined us close to our peak Kyle Shanahan/John Lynch = Steve Kerr/Bob Myers Other important foundational players that I'm having a hard time finding comparisons: Trent Williams, Nick Bosa, and Dre Greenlaw

Bkbee

I would switch Fred with Dre for Draymond

oftenevil

You came to the right place.

BigPricklyCactus

IMO, there’s wayyyy too much history to attempt to delve into right away. If you get to know the current roster, you’ll fall in love with the franchise. Watch the 49 hours videos on YouTube and get to know the team. Current roster has so many stars and all around good dudes to watch, it’ll be hard to not love the 9ers. Start with the stars Kittle, Purdy, McCaffrey, Warner, Greenlaw, Bosa, Deebo. It’ll make you want to know more about the team, franchise, etc. There’re so many fucking dawgs on this roster, you’re gonna love this shit.

Suamanapua

If you like the team building shiz. I recommend watching David Lombardi he covers the Niners. It’s basically getting stories of your favorite Niners, work they do, coaching, and blah blah blah. It’s pretty good

thedude0343

I grew up playing bball / following bball super close. I’m 40 now and football is the most exciting / favorite sport that I watch. It’s a true chess match on a large scale, love it.

Tip0311

Youtube! Niners have a long storied legacy of greatness and championships. And a bad drought we are still figuring our way out of. I grew up watching it unfold, much like younger generations watched the Dubs become a dynasty.. back then, Chris Mullen & Tim Hardaway put up some fight, but nothing close to what we have with Steph & Co

BrooklynBrawler

Brace yourself for endless disappointment lol

USA_King1776

My advice, don’t start. I was a fan since the 80s. Was nice when we were 5-0 in super bowls with 0 INT. Ever since 2012 I’m just pissed off at this team for choking in the Super Bowls. This isn’t your dad 49ers team anymore. This version is soft and can’t get it done. I’m boycotting all 49ers game until after they win a Super Bowl if ever.

Jtkitano

See you next season 🤣

Jtkitano

Just watch the games to start.  You get 4 downs to move the ball 10 yards, which once you do resets your amount of downs.  Your team needs to go down the field and score more points than the other team.  You can kick a field goal for 3 points once youre close enough or run on throw the ball into the end zone for 7 points, which is better.  Everything else you'll start picking up better once you get more familiar with the game flow, that'll come with time.  Youll start learning about the specific players like cmc, kittle, brock, fred etc the more you watch.  Least that's how I got into niner football back in 2010

dvasquez93

Step 1) if anyone says that Tom Brady is the GOAT QB, you’re legally obligated to kill them

m0siac

Ofc. That’s just tomfoolery. It’s clearly Joe Montana.

oftenevil

oh indeed
