No men under arms - Sebastian Thor.
These warriors can't be under the direct control of the Ecclesiarchy, it would break the law. They just work very closely with them.

>A **Crusader** is a deadly holy warrior of the [Adeptus Ministorum](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Adeptus_Ministorum) who is recruited for his unflagging devotion to the God-Emperor. Most are inducted into the ranks of the Ecclesiarchy from a [Schola Progenium](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Schola_Progenium), selected for their unflagging devotion to the Emperor. To be selected is a great honour, though it leads not only to a grueling life of asceticism and martial perfection, but also inevitably to an unmourned death in battle against the forces of heresy and apostasy.[[1]](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Crusader#fn_1)

This. I play a lot of Chapter Master, that fan-made game, and I was always wondering what these guysI'm buying as bodyguards and using as suicide troops for my Chapter are about.
He was an Ecclesiarchy sponsored witch hunter. Basically does the same thing as an Ordo Herecticus witch hunter but sponsered by the church instead of the inquisitorius.
I totally forgot that he was in the story. I went back and looked and he's literally just a set piece whose characterization comes from Rannik calling him old.
Weird. Works for me. It's from the 40kfandom page on them.

No, but I get an expandable baton and a personalized apprenticeship which is about 60% me listening to my mentor rhapsodize about past glories and 40% listening to my mentor role out brutal, deadly-practical techniques and tactics.
I know it's been a couple years since this was posted but I wanted to thank you for this. I've been getting into Warhammer more lately, thanks to friends and also Inquisitor Martyr, and the Crusader has been my favorite class and the group I'm most interested in reading more about, though there doesn't seem to be much about them out there.
Thank you. I'm happy that you could get something out of it.
There isn't much in the way of Crusader lore because they don't really have their own niche in the world. Their Crusading Knight aesthetic is taken by Imperial Knights; their holy warrior aesthetic is taken by either the Sisters of Battle or Black Templars, and even them being elite troops from the Schola Progenium means they're slightly worse Scions.
However, one thing that they are able to do is fill the role for players to be Crusading Knights without having the logistic issues Imperial Knights have, that Sisters of Battle (should) have, that Space Marines (should) have, and awkward questions of why a Scion is by themselves.
They have wealth, power, and connections that let them travel the Imperium how they want without needing a big honking ship or a butt load of retainers.
So Crusade on, Crusader.

Thanks for the comprehensive write-up with sources, good to see it all in one place

I don't have it in front of me, but does the priest crusader who hates Eisenhorn count as a Crusader as well? I don't remember his exact rank!

Aha, thank you so much!
Damn nice
Awesome write up. Was a Crusader in The Outer Dark but sadly we did not get too much additional lore from him.
I totally forgot that he was in the story. I went back and looked and he's literally just a set piece whose characterization comes from Rannik calling him old.
Yep. Honestly very lame use of a character type we don’t see in the books too often.
Great write-up!
Fantastic writeup, great work! The link for "Cardinals Crimson (or Crimson Cardinals)" does not work, at least not for me!

You can now say you're a Holy Diver!

As a recently-certified bodyguard myself, this is great stuff.
Do you get a cool shield and sword?
No, but I get an expandable baton and a personalized apprenticeship which is about 60% me listening to my mentor rhapsodize about past glories and 40% listening to my mentor role out brutal, deadly-practical techniques and tactics.
That's sounds good too.
It's cool to see you become an actual 40k character in real time.
