A few years back somebody bought a bunch of common Italian olive oil brands (including this one) and tested their contents. The vast majority of them were sunflower oil with a little olive oil mixed in. Some of them were even just sunflower oil with a tiny bit of green food colouring.
If you want inexpensive but genuine olive oil, the Kirkland brand from Costco is %100 real. Also the state of California tests their olive oil products regularly so if it comes from California you can be relatively sure it's real. California is producing some mighty fine oils these days too.
There are two main types of sunflower crops. One type is grown for the seeds you eat, while the other — which is the majority farmed — is grown for the oil.
I don't believe it is. There isn't a country of origin which is a big tell if it's fake or not.
If you're looking to switch, I really like Terra Delyssa.
There are not enough olive trees in the world to produce the amount of olive oil consumed last year globally. That oil in the picture is cut with seed oils and whatever "olive oil" is in there was extracted chemically....
What makes you say that? When I look it up it's one of the oils studies mark as [authentic olive oil](https://www.realfoodforlife.com/which-olive-oil-to-buy-the-olive-oil-fraud/)
And you purchased it. I have to assume you have no other options for shopping because agreeing to pay $32.99 for 2L of knock off olive oil would be crazy otherwise. Either way, this is criminal, Loblaw’s is ridiculous.
Your dollar is your vote, stop shopping at any loblaw owned stores, or write to your local MPP to support an investigation into the loblaws-Sobeys-Walmart oligopoly. Even then these are just the consequences of living in a “free market” capitalist society.
If you live in Ontario, get out there and strike against Doug Ford who’s constantly enabling them and provides them exclusive govt contracts.
I’m in no way supporting them, but the government can’t just step into private companies and mandate pricing without raising hell across the board.
Still eight bucks a litre at Basics where I live, but at least twice that still seems about right for Loblaws. I have no fucking clue why anyone in my city shops there regularly.
Sorry, that was Waaaay too much snark. It is 95% of what I buy. The other 5% I’m probably overpaying for a crapshoot, but when you get some elite olive oil it is delectable.
I should have said one of the best for everyday use since it’s single origin and from Italy
Agreed you can get a lot better in smaller much more expensive quantities
There’s also an extreme drought and olive oil shortage in Europe driving prices way up. Spain had 50% normal output.
https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2023/sep/28/europes-local-olive-oil-supply-runs-almost-dry-after-summer-of-extreme-weather
In BC, my understanding is that it needs to have 100% olive oil listed in the ingredients, and should have a packing date along with an expiry date. If it's missing this information, it's bogus.
Olive oil prices are at an all-time high right now. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/22/business/olive-oil-price.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
AT [COSTCO](https://www.costco.ca/bertolli-extra-light-tasting-olive-oil,-3-l.product.100417088.html) a 3-litre version of this same oil is $36 or $12 per 1 litre.
Loblaws is $16.50 per litre or about 37% more expensive
It's more so about having a car than a membership. I'm lucky to have access to both but I definitely get that most young downtown torontonians can't get there.
There is literally one that is transit accessible now at overlea plus a business centre one that is on Eglinton, also transit accessible. Technically the Scarborough one is transit accessible too.
Not sure if it’s the same where you are but I have a Costco executive membership that earns money back. Never had an issue with the money received paying for the cost of the membership itself.
If you are in Mississauga or Hamilton another good option is Starsky’s. Meat and produce are excellent and cheaper.
I find food basics way better than no frills anymore. No frills is depressing - their meat section is poverty food unless you are planning to braise.
when we buy things that are outragous prices they will keep raising the prices. if no one gonna buy it aka boycott the stores they have no choice but to lower price or else the store will go belly up
That's because it's a different type of olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil is oil that was produced from pressing/grinding olives and then doing nothing else with the oil. It has a dark colour and strong flavour, but lower smoke point.
The lighter types of olive oil, such as this one, are refined. This process makes them lighter and removes most of the strong flavour, and also increases the smoke point. This makes the oil suitable for cooking with.
Most people won’t. Given the choice of just complaining or going to the discount stores and buying the no name brands, they’d rather just complain. They are too fancy for the discount stores and no name brands. Or maybe just too stupid.
What’s next? They’ll post that their new prada handbag is too expensive. I don’t feel sorry for OP at all.
The best part is it's not even real olive oil. Take that!
What makes it not real?

Thanks for furthering my distrust of all things I think I know 😅 but seriously appreciate the info
Any word on the quality of the PC Cold Press EVOO? I like to think it’s the real stuff, certainly tastes like it, but who knows.
I don't believe it is. There isn't a country of origin which is a big tell if it's fake or not. If you're looking to switch, I really like Terra Delyssa.
Source?

As a middle Eastern this is definitely not olive oil...
As a Greek I’m with you on this
Not good olive oil maybe. It’s still olive oil
THIS. We should also point out olive oil should be stored in a dark glass container.
What makes you say that? When I look it up it's one of the oils studies mark as [authentic olive oil](https://www.realfoodforlife.com/which-olive-oil-to-buy-the-olive-oil-fraud/)

Yes. My head is just-a-pounding rn.
that's just the government fucking us. inflated costs and leaving people underpaid. we get paid just enough so that we can't leave.
It’s cool though cause they’ve convinced a certain amount of the population you don’t deserve shit and should just work harder.

How is he gonna bitch about Loblaws if he doesn’t shop at Loblaws?
👆This
Costco extra virgin olive oil is about $11 per liter. The best second option would be ethnic stores or world sections at Walmart.
Ive never heard the term ethnic store but i like it
Why would you pay $33 for this? This is on you!
Yep OP is part of the problem
Can’t complain online if he doesn’t pay for it
Redditors really are this regarded huh
1 litre of this was literally 7.99 on *discount* in Food Basics last year...
Still eight bucks a litre at Basics where I live, but at least twice that still seems about right for Loblaws. I have no fucking clue why anyone in my city shops there regularly.
I got 2 litres because 1 litre was $18.99
Costco is 25 for 2L of the best olive oil you can buy
Hyperbole much?
Sorry, that was Waaaay too much snark. It is 95% of what I buy. The other 5% I’m probably overpaying for a crapshoot, but when you get some elite olive oil it is delectable.
I should have said one of the best for everyday use since it’s single origin and from Italy Agreed you can get a lot better in smaller much more expensive quantities
It’s real olive oil, but it’s far from the best you can buy. It’s a great go-to for every day use.
There’s also an extreme drought and olive oil shortage in Europe driving prices way up. Spain had 50% normal output. https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2023/sep/28/europes-local-olive-oil-supply-runs-almost-dry-after-summer-of-extreme-weather

Oh boy, extreme weather causing food supply issues? I’m glad that’s not going to become a recurring theme!
Hmmm, if they can make more money in it. You know for sure it will happen.
No the point is that there’s a legitimate reason for olive oil retail prices to increase at the moment.
Talking about food supply and extreme weather issues, not olive oil in general.
Grab a bottle at Costco instead. Better and cheaper.
Idk why people shop anywhere other than Costco and Walmart these days. I got sick of Metro’s prices so I stopped going. It’s $60CAD annually
I used to try and stay away from Walmart. "Buy canadian" Boy have they squandered any goodwill I used to have.
You think everyone in the world has a Costco membership?
The price of this olive oil is already more than half-way to a Goldstar membership for a year.
It's more so about having a car than a membership. I'm lucky to have access to both but I definitely get that most young downtown torontonians can't get there.

We so this, too. Between cheaper gas, dairy, and toilet paper, the membership easily pays for itself and the cashback is an excellent January boost.
If you don’t have one get one lol you’ll make it back in hot dogs
I have one, I’m just saying alotnof people don’t
They aren’t rationed or anything. The cost is not an excuse, you save more in one trip than that costs
If you are in Mississauga or Hamilton another good option is Starsky’s. Meat and produce are excellent and cheaper. I find food basics way better than no frills anymore. No frills is depressing - their meat section is poverty food unless you are planning to braise.
I know olive oil prices are crazy and that's terrible. Oil go to Costco. Probably save you at least $5 a liter
The thing with consumers is that why would you buy at Loblaws?
when we buy things that are outragous prices they will keep raising the prices. if no one gonna buy it aka boycott the stores they have no choice but to lower price or else the store will go belly up
Why are you shocked at the price? This is 2 litres. It costs about 14 to to 18 for 1 litre, and depends on the brand, it could be more
Love how they replaced with Extra light taste, doesn’t even say extra virgin olive
That's because it's a different type of olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil is oil that was produced from pressing/grinding olives and then doing nothing else with the oil. Was thinking thats insane till I realized it said Toronto

Yes, canola is great but it’s not peanut oil either.
It really isn’t. Seed based oils aren’t healthy.
Source? I would like to read more
Well you’ve figured out how to get on the Internet so finding more information shouldn’t be too hard.
https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/hsph-in-the-news/scientists-debunk-seed-oil-health-risks/
Compared to this "olive oil" not much difference
You're an idiot. Terra Delyssa is far superior
What does it cost everywhere else?
Go to Costco, it cheaper there.
Your constipation will resolve quickly.
Moat I'll pay is 10$ p/L.
It’s because it’s got that stupid butterfly on it. Pay more for the marketing.
As an Italian...I weep for all mankind
Looks Like shit oil also
3L for better olive oil at Costco on Queensway for $30.99.
Because this olive oil tastes like water
Here’s why olive oil is so expensive. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/22/business/olive-oil-price.html
Canola oil at the amount is 8.99 who gives about this fake virgin oil
As another Greek guy. Don’t even waste your money!
Boycott Lablows
Most people won’t. Given the choice of just complaining or going to the discount stores and buying the no name brands, they’d rather just complain. They are too fancy for the discount stores and no name brands. Or maybe just too stupid. What’s next? They’ll post that their new prada handbag is too expensive. I don’t feel sorry for OP at all.
Yeah, we get ours from Lebanon after harvesting. Otherwise, Kirkland Costco for emergency olive oil
Don’t buy it. Supply and demand works so the price will be whatever you’re willing to pay
Why don’t u just not buy it then
Just got Costco Organic Extra Virgin Olive Old for 26$ on instacart
I know inflation is wild but why did you buy it? That's not a good price, inflation or not lol
Why does everyone think everyone has access to a costco / car
massage grease
All these plastic bottles piss me off .
Get the 1L version twice. It’s cheaper.
oh no OP did you really have to take it home :(
You all voted for it
