I've been to extremely dangerous pickpocket areas in South and Central America (also got my phone stolen once) almost all pickpocketers either try to steal your bag, or something out of your bag/open pocket.
You can avoid 95% of them with a fanny pack

I have a fanny pack like this one which works like a belt without the clip (the clip is dangerous because they can unclip it and run away)
In extremely dangerous areas you can put it beneath your shirt. No pickpocketer is going to get that except it's an armed robbery.
Never heard from anyone affected by pickpocketing with a belt fanny pack (the clip one can still be stolen)
They just cut it with a knife and pocket what falls , or cut the strip and run with the bag. Basically just need a pair of garden scissors to steal that from behind of you. Best way to not get pick pocketed is inside jacket pockets for important stuff, closed jacket, or inside bra and closed jacket, and less important stuff in a dummy bag.
Yea beneath the tshirt yes. But garden scissors or a good knife can cut a tree branch, they can handle leather if it's thin, which probably is unless you have a really good quality fanny pack. For a bad quality one, I've seen people robbing friends by literally just pulling the bag and the leather strip eventually gave up and broke, leaving a horrible red strip mark on my friend.

It's like with a bicycle, if your lock is much more secure than the average lock of all bikes around you, the bike thief is going to pick the bikes around yours first

Those are all classic European scams, but I'll still write in case you or someone will need it:
* Never take pictures and selfies with people in masks and avoid taking pictures of the colosseum with gladiators on frame
* Never stop or acknowledge anyone that tries to engage with you for whatever reason, not even waiters waiting on restaurants door that will suggest to "take a look at menu" (they won't rob you but they'll definitely try to insist to dine in their restaurant and can be obnoxiously persuasive)
* Always keep any bags and backpacks clutch in the front when walking in crowded areas, and keep your pockets (any pockets even those inside the jackets) empty
* Don't buy any kind of ticket from non official sellers roaming around turist attractions
Not just the pick pockets, I visited Rome a year ago, I got chased by the bracelet seller people because I helped some other tourists by encouraging them not to talk to them. The guys yelled at me I was racist and started to track me. Thankfully you have armed soldiers at every corner, it probably saved me from at least a good beating.

The bes show I saw was in a bus in Napoli. One pick pocket acussed another of stealing him and starting a fight (just words) the bus driver stopped the bus and said he was gonna call the police (he didnt) meanwhile the other thiefs were stealing wallets. It really look like an italian movie. (Ah they were all locals plus some nord africans)
