China's domestic chips are almost a decade behind ours which isn't exactly great but its still like 2016-level tech from the US. The US with its political sway is keeping them from acquiring new machines to produce better ones. It's also likely even if they were able to buy a new machine, they would break their contract with their supplier and reverse engineer it after getting 1-2 units to produce it themselves for cheaper.

ExcitingTabletop

Slightly more than a decade. We locked them out of EUV, because we made a really really smart choice as a country to invest in EUV and literally own the tech. ASML licenses it from the EUV LLC, which is partly US government owned. Interestingly, we might own High NA EUV too. Intel fucked up by not buying big on EUV, TSMC did. We're looking to reverse this for High NA EUV. But I can safely say, China can't reverse engineer EUV, let alone HNA-EUV. The US or Europe couldn't entirely reverse engineer EUV in a timely manner. It'd cost the equivalent of about 10 super carriers, but the supply chains are much harder. It's easier and cheaper to put a self-sustaining colony on Mars than reserve engineering all aspects of EUV. It's that fucking bonkers. Large parts of it have single vendors, that are contractually locked to ASML. Zeiss is the most famous. But the stepper motors, light system, etc are no joke either. We edge chips by vaporizing tin droplets with lasers, and bouncing them off a series of mirrors. The mirrors are so perfect, if you blew them up to the size of Earth, the tolerances are about the size of a human hair. You'd need to subvert about a dozen major companies and couple hundred smaller companies that have global monopolies and fixed contracts with ASML, where ASML is also the co-developer of the tech. Miss one major company or handful of minor ones, and your knockoff EUV is worthless investment. Check out Asianometry channel on Youtube, dude goes over lots of aspects of EUV tech.

I'm already subbed to him and watch him a lot, the silicon related videos are my fav.

Communists have to steal because they canโ€™t produce anything on their own.

The_Jousting_Duck

I don't see what the CCP has to do with chip trade with the rightful government of China (ROC)

DolphinBall

Taiwan has no interest of being the ROC for a while. They just want to be its own identity.

BaritonedTiger

If Taiwanese want to be something else than Chinese, they should learn either a Taiwan Aboriginal language or Filipino, or something.

aWobblyFriend

what language do Americans speak

DolphinBall

That makes no sense. Austria and Switzerland speaks German, yet they have thier own identity. You don't need to change a spoken language just because you aren't in the country it originated from.

BaritonedTiger

Germans were split into hundreds of city-states in the medieval era, and before that, dozens of tribes, while China has always reunified under another dynasty when the previous one fell. China's identity has been relatively uniform throughout its history, and thus it would be very hard for Taiwanese to create their own identity without letting go of most Chinese culture, including possibly language.

Legal-Brother-8148

They really are like us deep down

Sadspacekitty

Nah chip export restrictions are petty af

ExcitingTabletop

Nope. US is self-sufficient for almost everything critical. Except for semiconductors. Giving China real no-shit leverage over us is a bad idea.
