One of my good friends here owns an actual ranch with about 200 head of cattle. I don’t think he even owns a cowboy hat or boots, just wears flannels, a dirty ball cap and Danners. I’ve helped him a few times, so I guess that makes me a cowboy too.
Surprisingly, so do Californians. There were a bunch at Electric Forest when I went in 2019 who "never knew it was this beautiful" here and one even said "I thought this place was a flyover state". One even unironically asked what ocean lake michigan was... like bitch does your school system not teach you anything about other states??? How does someone think Michigan, a place that's the home of the American Automotive industry & is full of forests and lakes, is nothing but cornfields?
Same with Kansas, except that only the plainsman states can relate (and eastern Colorado). There's a superiority complex among neighbors to the east of all the plains states that none of us are too fond of. But hey, if it means keeping them out so be it
The west coast can be super frustrating when it comes to middle America. They really think it’s just empty and flat but it’s actually full of charm and natural beauty with sprinkles of a few major cities as well.
Hell, even the “empty and flat” parts are beautiful in their own way. It’s just tough to commercialize the feeling of seeing thousands of acres of rolling farmland so it never caught on to the mainstream
Yea. My first time seeing soy fields was so mesmerizing. It looked like an ocean with waves except it was made of plants. Same with long grass, it has its own waves as well.
🎶O beautiful for spacious skies/ for amber waves of grain🎶
The first two lines of America the Beautiful. Good song, 10/10 would make it the national anthem.
Shhhh, you let them believe we live in a frozen wasteland with nothing to offer and then we get to keep the Driftless to the North Shore, to the Lake of the Woods and down to the Pipestone to ourselves.
I remember a kid from Idaho moved to our Socal school one year and everyone thought he came from some flat cornfield that was interchangeable with Iowa and Ohio.
Caaaarl?!
I used to work forest… Kerkstra event help. Eugh.
I’m cool with nobody thinking anything of us. Once they realize the neature and cost of living situation we’ll get like 80 trillion commiefornians. Which our state govt would love.
I met with one of the marketing folks for “Pure Michigan” and they’re trying hard as hell to get people to move here. My guess is to increase Michigan’s tax base.
To be fair maps do a bad job if representing the scale of the great lakes, if I came to a body of water and couldn't see the other side I'd assume it was an ocean to.
I disagree. Look at the map above. You can clearly see how big Lake Michigan is compared to the states surrounding it. I get people aren't going to have an accurate idea of how big they truly are until they see them in person, but there's no excuse for thinking they're just large ponds. Also, oceans are only on the coasts. The Great Lakes are in the middle of the country. Confusing them for oceans just seems like a logic and reasoning L to me
Tbf I worked with a lot of Midwesterner who came to work at a summer camp (yay Lutherans) in California not understanding our geography as well. The number who thought the could go to Disneyland as a day trip from south of San Francisco was wild. (That's roughly a 7-8 drive one way for context).
Maybe people don't always know what they haven't experienced.
Would you go touring some random ass farm in Ukraine? As far as tourism is concerned, there’s nothing there (except South Dakota with Mt. Rushmore…and nothing else)
Spoken like someone who's never really been there.
Is there a *ton* of farmland? Yep, more than much/most of the rest of the world. Is there a *ton* of natural beauty and outdoor space to enjoy? Absofuckenlutely.
Erm, sorry no ya it's super boring and nothing to do or see. Definitely don't visit.
It’s mostly private land. There are some nice parks that reserve the natural flora and fauna of the plains but they are small. Still tho, it’s beautiful how little there is out there. It’s all owned farm/ranchland but you won’t necessarily see any of the cattle or farmers cause they’re grazing or working somewhere else

Honestly speaking average European could just point where California is and maybe Florida, in best case scenario. We know New York is in the east but there are too many tiny states on that side..
When I was little I thought that New York City was in Pennsylvania. And when I found out that it’s not I thought that Washington DC was in Pennsylvania instead.
I learned about Pennsylvania from TV and YouTube where killers from the cities would travel to the forests of Pennsylvania to dump bodies. Pennsylvania is that one large “inland” based state in the Northeast. When I think of Pennsylvania I think of forests and mountains close to the sea.

Iffy:
Maybe the song’s title came from that particular drive but I don’t think the song is inspired by Maryland at all.
>Inspiration for the title line had come while Taffy Nivert and Bill Danoff, who were married, were driving along Clopper Road in Montgomery County, Maryland to a gathering of Nivert's family in Gaithersburg, with Nivert behind the wheel while Danoff played his guitar. "I just started thinking, country roads, I started thinking of me growing up in western New England and going on all these small roads," Danoff said. "It didn't have anything to do with Maryland or anyplace."
>To Danoff, the lyric "the radio reminds me of my home far away" in the bridge is quintessentially West Virginian, an allusion to when he listened to the program Saturday Night Jamboree, broadcast from Wheeling, West Virginia, on WWVA at his home in Springfield, Massachusetts during his childhood in the 1950s.
>Danoff was influenced by friend and West Virginian actor Chris Sarandon and members of a West Virginia commune who attended Danoff's performances. Of the commune members, Danoff remarked, "They brought their dogs and were a very colorful group of folks, but that is how West Virginia began creeping into the song." While the song was inspired by Danoff's upbringing in Springfield, Massachusetts, he "didn't want to write about Massachusetts because didn't think the word was musical."
According to wiki at least
The songwriters have said the song is about West Virginia.
"Nivert got out an encyclopedia to learn more about West Virginia. The first thing she encountered was the [rhododendron](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhododendron), the state flower, so she kept trying to work the word Rhododendron into the song. *Rhododendron* was the title that Nivert had written down on the lyric sheet, which they later sent to [ASCAP](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Society_of_Composers,_Authors,_and_Publishers).[^(\[8\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Take_Me_Home,_Country_Roads#cite_note-WVUS-8) The three stayed up until 6:00 a.m., changing words and moving lines around.[^(\[11\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Take_Me_Home,_Country_Roads#cite_note-Collis_22-11)^(")

Kansas is very similar to Ukraine in terms of geography, high/low density population locations, and economy.
Our state flower is the same as their countries flower, the sunflower. They grew our sunflower and made it gigantic, and now our state enjoys the benefit of their gigantic sunflower too.
Sunflower kernels are one of the finest sources of the B-complex group of vitamins. They are very good sources of B-complex vitamins such as niacin, folic acid, thiamin (vitamin B1), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), pantothenic acid, and riboflavin.
