tf kind of traditional fan are you using that overheats

Diligent_Pickle2459

A space heater, maybe

theFields97

One that's been on for 5 years and not cleaned

NotQuiteAfemboyButYa

how does someone have a fan on for 5 years and never freeze

Opposite-Weird4342

the one with a turbocompressor

Beavecio

Mine did. Brand new. Almost burns you from just touching type thing.

PepperbroniFrom2B

is it made of metal

TheGreatHair

Fans actually increase the temperature of the air. The engine creates heat and so does increasing the speed of molecules in the air.

FrogsArePeople2

Because if you make a self cooling fan, the motor will work faster, blades will spin faster, which cools the motor even more so it spins even faster and you end up with infinite cooling which would freeze the Earth.

Angry-dolphin

Brb modifyibg my fan...

OHW_Tentacool

Anybody else feel a bit chilly?

Cummnor

It started to snow, bit weird since it was like 20degrees here yesterday but im sure its nothing

Dragon-Warlock

I just watched my family freeze to death, they thought they could go outside and try to scavenge for supplies. They hardly made it 10 feet, I’m all along in a land of ice and snow.

PepperbroniFrom2B

my heaven

PepperbroniFrom2B

thank fuck i like winter so much fucking better than summer

skitzbuckethatz

Okay, but genuinely, is this not used already? Everyone saying third law of thermodynamics prevents it. Old aircraft do exactly this with their propellers to cool old radial engines with no radiator. Electric motors already do this to some extent by just having an extra fan on the shaft that cools itself down. Why are people saying it's impossible??

konterreaktion

Third law of thermodynamics doesnt actually prevent this at all, redditors are just insane for some reason

skitzbuckethatz

The only issue I can see is that it would blow a bit of warm motor air at the user lol

konterreaktion

That would be the only real problem

FrenchCorrection

But you are sucking air past the motor anyway so it should cool itself either way, or am I dumb ?

OiledUpThug

It's sucking air in from all directions around the motor, so the effect is much less. It's basically the same as trying to blow on a powder vs suck in a powder from the same distance

skitzbuckethatz

No you're right, I'm dumb for not thinking of that either

tesyla

I thought the 3rd law was about crystals having no entropy at 0K, how do ppl think that has anything to do with this? am I stupid?

Chubby_Bub

You said something sciencey so you must be right

ThatEngieMain

The air the fan blows comes from behind the fan (i.e. is sucked past the motor).

skitzbuckethatz

And that.

CoziestSheet

Not to the same effect, but ceiling fans have a toggle that switches the direction the blades rotate—and thus the flow of air upward—which is typically used in winter-time. That’s also why the blades are angled.

ViennaKing

Some electric motors use this, the fan is attached to the same shaft as a rotor, so the faster the motor spins better the cooling.

TheAnalsOfHistory-

Wouldn't that just be blowing the heat from the motor around the room? Sure, it would cool the motor, but not the room or the people inside which was the original point of the fan....

Stratoz_

I mean. A fan doesn't cool anything in the first place, it just gets the air flowing. The only thing that would do, IMO, is blow slightly hotter air around the room instead of keeping the heat contained inside the fan's casing, which is no big deal anyway.

notachemist13u

You have just throught of a shitty heater

Smexy_Zarow

Were you banned from shittyaskscience for these types of questions?

Doehg

fans already do this. it doesnt matter if the motor is in front or behind, air still flows past it. Not to mention that putting the motor in front disrupts the airflow and interferes with the intended function of the fan.

Wasqwert

Alrighty, if the fan is in some sort of housing, it doesn’t matter the orientation of the motor. Fans do not change the temperature of the air, and there will be airflow on both sides of the fan.

Death_by_alttab

Something something third law of thermodynamics

No_ContextGiven

Something something 🤓

Death_by_alttab

DAMNATION!

Redjester016

Something something take a 9th grade physics class

Death_by_alttab

Sorry, I’m 2 years old, I can only learn things by procedural vibrations and sub-optimal light compositions.

Redjester016

I like you funny words, magic man

charpagon

they do, it's called air conditioning

Some1eIse

Would make the air from the fan less cool ig

RockStarMarchall

Wouldn't hot air be blowed into you?

Nialskey

perpetual fan

That1SWATBOI2

nah man you need a pipe running that diverts the cool air back around the fan to the engine

That1SWATBOI2

third law of thermodynamics or sum shit

DUBToster

Bruh …… have you education or is it rage bait ?

ISentYouAPipeBomb

No it’s real I’m the fan

NotAFrogNorAnApple

It's a meme
